We gather on this the second Sunday of Advent with joyful expectations. We can sense that something wonderful is about to happen.
John the Baptist became a messenger of God. One would think that God might have done better choosing someone else. You know . . . someone more respectable. God is full of surprises.
John had an urgent message burning in his heart. John wanted the people to prepare themselves for the coming of the Messiah. To prepare for the coming of the Messiah involved more than just thinking about his coming. A lot of hard work was involved if the people were truly going to be ready for the coming of the Messiah. John used the word “repent” John wanted the people to turn from their old way of life and start living a new life. This involved much effort on the part of the people.
The message of John the Baptist rings in our ears this second week of Advent. What valleys in our lives need to be filled? What hills and mountains need to be levelled off in preparation for the coming of the Messiah? What changes need to be made in our lives in the coming weeks?
No matter what situations we might find ourselves in we can still experience the joy that comes from knowing Jesus Christ. But you better hurry, the Messiah is about to come. He will soon be here. Get ready!
