During mid-October 2021 work was completed on our parish Columbarium, located in the back of the Cathedral in what was once the Mortuary Chapel. Many of you will remember when remains of loved ones were brought to the Mortuary Chapel on the evening before the funeral.  In those days, remains were never before the altar but this changed after the Second Vatican Council. With the completion of the Columbarium, the Mortuary Chapel has been restored to its original purpose; a place of prayer and repose for loved ones who have died.
The Columbarium was designed and made in Ireland and its design is based on the Celtic Cross which can be found on St. Senan’s Bell. The façade is bronze with accents of blue and gold. The doves in the design represent the Holy Spirit, whilst the fist echoes one of the first symbols of Christianity. The colours are also significant, blue and gold pays homage to our Blessed Mother and reflect the mosaic of Our Lady in the Chapel. Blue and gold are also the Clare County colours, linking our home here on earth with our home in heaven.
Our thanks to Joseph O’Neill of Eternal Columbarium who provided the Columbarium, and Michael Clancy and Michael McInerney who were responsible for its installation.
Feel free to visit the Columbarium to view it for yourself and, if you have an interest in acquiring a niche please contact Joseph on 085 214 8301
